ON THE COURSE WITH FRIENDS
Our Saturday Golf Friends group started as a laid‑back Saturday foursome for one simple reason: one of our friends couldn’t make our regular Thursday game. So our founding member, Joe F., started grabbing a Saturday tee time every week so Tom H. could still get out and play. I (Christopher Zsarnay) began jumping in on more of those Saturdays, and before long a few more friends joined us and the group started to grow.
About five years ago, Joe had to step away after shoulder surgery, so I took over running the group. As more friends joined and we started playing for a little cash, I realized we needed an easier way to keep track of scores, skins, and payouts. I threw together a rough scoring sheet in Google Sheets where we could plug in gross scores and closies, and it would crunch the net scores, net skins, first and second place net, and who owed what.
Our friend Charlie S. and Master Programmer stepped in and rebuilt that rough sheet into the solid scoring system we use today. After each round, we hang out for about 15 minutes, punch in the numbers, and our SGF program spits out all the results and money amount to pay out the winners.
To play in any SGF event, you just pay whatever the course charges for the round, plus 30.00 (cash or electronic) for the net games and 10.00 for our SGF service fee—typically half of that fee goes back to the course staff as a tip.
Looking ahead, our goal is simple: keep playing golf together as friends while keeping the competition fun, fair, and friendly for everyone in the group. We want SGF to stay a place where the scores matter, the handicaps stay honest, and new friends are always welcome to join the fun.
